How We Support Communities
ICRI Global works with communities to strengthen three interconnected areas, creating pathways for community-led climate resilience and sustainable development.
Knowledge Governance & Data Sovereignty
Communities hold valuable knowledge about their ecosystems, climate patterns, and sustainable practices developed and refined across generations. We support communities to document and protect this knowledge using systems they control, building governance capacity that serves community priorities.
What this looks like in practice:
- Elder-to-youth knowledge transfer using community-controlled platforms
- Documentation systems that communities own and operate
- Legal protection frameworks (when communities want external engagement)
- Governance protocols for community decision-making
Community Capacity & Infrastructure Strengthening
Lasting change requires permanent local capacity—not temporary external services. We work with communities to build infrastructure, skills, and systems that remain under community ownership long after our engagement ends.
What this looks like in practice:
- Youth training and employment as environmental monitors
- Climate and biodiversity monitoring systems that communities operate
- Technology and skills transfer
- Governance strengthening for community decision-making
Equitable Partnerships & Benefit-Sharing
When communities choose to engage with researchers, organizations, or development projects, they deserve support to negotiate from positions of knowledge and strength.
What this looks like in practice:
- Understanding options and evaluating opportunities independently
- Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes
- Negotiating fair terms and benefit-sharing arrangements
- Legal frameworks ensuring community control and benefits
